2017 NHRA SPRING TRIALS
This project was my second foray into the world of NHRA drag racing. My first experience was as a behind-the-scenes videographer for Danny Rowe Racing and their then-sponsor, Agave Underground Tequila. While motorsports have always captivated me, being directly on hand, on track for a real NHRA drag racing event was an intense, and inspiring experience. When I was invited to shoot the 2017 NHRA Spring Trials, naturally, I embraced the assignment. The Spring Trials are a unique week in the world of motorsports in that all of the race teams join in one place prior to the first event of the season to test their cars on an NHRA regulation track, closed to the public. At the end of the week there is a public day for spectators, but the rest of the time is curiously, almost hauntingly mellow. This allows certain photographers full access to the track and pits, even more-so than on an official race weekend. And, even for seasoned sports, and action photographers, shooting an 11,000 horsepower top fuel dragster in extremely close proximity as it launches to 330 miles per hour presents unique challenges!
